This is a project I produced while attending SCAD in 2017. The goal was to use elements in an environment to establish a mood and to task the audience with think more about the world that this scene would take place in. I am a fan of war movies, and was inspired by scenes where the main characters are alone in hostile environments, left to try and make the small areas they inhabit feel safe. The main scene I pulled from is American Sniper where the Chris Kyle is forced to collect jars of his own urine, because he doesn't have a moment to rest while in war. I wanted to illustrate this paranoid state of mind by creating my own sniper's nest scene, in a fictitious world where the cold war never ended. I made the space feel chaotic and claustrophobic by populating the space with junk that may bring some sense of safety to the person living here. I wanted to show a sense of time by having the space feel decayed and dark, much like scenes of modern day Chernobyl. I also wanted to use the lighting to create a separation between what is known, and what is not known. The bright exterior lighting obscures the outside world, and doesn't let the audience know what the person who lives here is actually seeing. Though the interior is decrepit and dangerous, it still feels safer than the world outside.
